1LT David R. Bernstein

1LT David Bernstein was valedictorian at his suburban Philadelphia high school and graduated fifth in his class at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 2001. He was killed Oct. 18 when enemy forces, using rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire, ambushed his patrol in Taza, Iraq. First Lieutenant Bernstein, under extreme enemy fire, risked his life in an effort to rescue one of his soldiers. Although suffering from a mortar wound, First Lieutenant Bernstein extracted the driver to safety, directed the security of his objective, and repulsed the enemy forces before succumbing to his wounds.

PFC John D. Hart

Date of birth: September 18, 1983
Date of death: October 18, 2003
Location: Taza, Iraq
PFC John Hart, 20, who enlisted in the Army after high school, was killed Oct. 18 when his patrol came under fire 160 miles north of Baghdad.

Spc. Jacob S. Fletcher

Unit: Company C, 2nd Battalion (Airborne), 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade
Date of birth: November 25, 1974
Date of death: November 13, 2003
Location: Samara, Iraq
Spc. Jacob Fletcher, 28, was killed when an improvised explosive device exploded next to the bus on which he was riding in Samara, Iraq.

Sgt. Joseph Minucci II

Sgt. Joseph Minucci, 23, was killed when an improvised explosive device exploded next to the bus on which he was riding in Samara, Iraq.

Spc. Kyle G. Thomas

Date of birth: July 28, 1983
Date of death: September 25, 2003
Location: Tikrit, Iraq
Spc. Kyle G. Thomas, 23, of Topeka, Kan., was killed on Sept. 25, 2003, in Tikrit, Iraq. Thomas was on patrol when an improvised explosive device exploded. He died of injuries sustained in the explosion.

Cpl. Justin W. Hebert

Unit: 319th Field Artillery, 173rd Airborne Brigade
Date of birth: November 27, 1979
Date of death: August 1, 2003
Location: Kirkuk, Iraq
Cpl. Justin Hebert, 20, was on a nighttime patrol when a rocket propelled grenade struck his vehicle, killing him and wounding three others.

Sgt. Michael E. Yashinski

Unit: 501st Forward Support Company, 173rd Airborne Brigade
Date of birth: October 8, 1979
Date of death: December 24, 2003
Location: Kirkuk, Iraq
Sgt. Michael Yashinski, 24, was electrocuted Dec. 24 while running a communication wire in Kirkuk, Iraq.

Spc. Craig S. Ivory

Unit: 501st Forward Support Company, 173rd Airborne Brigade
Date of birth: January 24, 1977
Date of death: August 17, 2003
Location: Kirkuk, Iraq
Spc. Craig Ivory, 26, died Aug. 17 in Homberg University Hospital, Germany after being medically evacuated from Kuwait on Aug. 12. He died of a stroke caused by heat exposure and dehydration.

Sgt. Sean C. Reynolds

Unit: 74th Long-Range Surveillance Detachment 173rd Airborne Brigade
Date of birth: November 6, 1977
Date of death: May 3, 2003
Location: Iraq
Sgt. Sean Reynolds, 25, was climbing a ladder when he fell causing his M4 rifle to accidentally discharge. Reynolds was assigned to the 74th Long-Range Surveillance
