CSM William L. Gardner II

Command Sergeant Major

Command Sgt. Maj. William L. Gardner II is a native of Florida, enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1983 and attended the basic and advanced individual training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he earned the MOS 82C (Field Artillery Surveyor). His first assignment was in Garlstedt, Germany, with the 2nd Armored Division (FWD). After completion of his first term of service, he attended Georgetown College to pursue his degree.

Command Sgt. Maj. Gardner returned to active service in 1988 and earned a secondary MOS of 13F (Fire Support Specialist). His assignments have included: 3-18th Field Artillery, Fort Sill, Oklahoma; 1-15th Field Artillery, Camp Casey, Korea; 2-319th AFAR, 82nd ABN, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; 1-27th FA, Babenhausen, Germany; and 4-320th FAR 4th BCT, 101st ABN (AASLT), Fort Campbell, Kentucky; 158th INF BDE, Camp Shelby, Mississippi; and Task Force Sinai, Egypt. His special assignments have included: Jacksonville Recruiting Battalion with duty at Daytona Beach, Florida; Senior ROTC instructor at the University of South Dakota; Senior Fire Support Observer Controller at Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels, Germany; and the Battalion CSM for the initial establishment of the European Warrior Transition Battalion in Heidelberg, Germany.

Command Sgt. Maj. Gardner has served as the CSM for the Guns of Glory Battalion, 4-320th FAR, Ft. Campbell, KY, the Brigade CSM for 158th INF BDE at Camp Shelby, MS, and the Task Force CSM for TF Sinai Egypt. CSM Gardner was also the I Corps Fires SGM at Ft. Lewis, Washington. His most recent assignment was with 19th Battlefield Coordination Detachment located at Ramstein Air Force Base.

Command Sgt. Maj. Gardner has deployed twice to Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Desert Storm), once to Afghanistan (RC East, Paktika), twice to the Balkans (Kosovo and Albania), and once to the Sinai, Egypt. He has also deployed in support of humanitarian relief efforts.

Command Sgt. Maj. Gardner is a graduate of every U.S. Army NCOES course, culminating in his graduation from the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, Class 057. He has attended numerous military schools and training courses including Airborne School, Observer Controller Academy, Battle Staff, Army Recruiter School, Army Master Fitness Trainer, Air Movements and Operations course, the Army Combatives course and the Anti-Terrorism Force Protection Level 2 course.

His military decorations include the Legion of Merit (1 OLC), the Bronze star medal (1 OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal (3 OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (4 OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (10 OLC), Good Conduct Medal (10th Award), the Meritorious Unit Citation (1 OLC), Valorous Unit Citation, the Superior Unit Award (1 OLC), the Overseas Service Medal (numeral 8), the Parachutist Badge, the U.S. Army Gold Recruiter Badge (with 3 sapphires), the Combat Action Badge, and various other awards. He is a proud member of the prestigious Sergeant Morales Club and has been accepted as a Distinguished Member of the 506th Infantry Regiment. He is also a recipient of the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara Medal, the Columbian Army Faithful Service Medal, the German Armed Forces Efficiency Badge Gold, the German Shutzenschnur Badge Gold and is a certified Master Scuba Diver.
