Col.
Thomas S. Matsel

COL Thomas S. Matsel was commissioned in the Field Artillery upon graduation from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. COL Matsel holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.


COL Matsel’s previous assignments include: Survey and Radar Platoon Leader, and Division Counterfire Officer in the 1st ID DIVARTY; Battery Fire Direction Officer, Platoon Leader and Battalion S-1 in the 4-5th FA, 1st ID, Fort Riley, KS; Field Artillery Intelligence Officer in III Corps Artillery; Assistant Battalion S-3 and Firing Battery Commander in 1-17th FA, 75th FA BDE, Fort Sill, OK; Southern Command Desk Officer, Army War Plans Division, and Executive Officer to the Director of Strategy Plans and Policy, Army DCSOPS, the Pentagon; Battalion S-3, 6-37th FA, 2nd ID, Camp Stanley, Korea; Regimental Fire Support Officer, 3rd ACR, Fort Carson, CO; Brigade S-3 and Brigade Executive Officer, 212th FA BDE; G-3, III Corps Artillery, Fort Sill, OK;  Assistant Deputy Director for Operations, Operations Team 5, NMCC, J-3, The Joint Staff, the Pentagon; Battalion Commander, 1-94 FA, 1st AD Baumholder, Germany; DCO, 1st BCT 10th MTN DIV,  Fort Drum, NY and RC- North, Afghanistan; and Deputy Division Chief, Capability Portfolio Review, Army G3/5/7 the Pentagon.  COL Matsel became the G3 of 7th Army Joint Multinational Training Command in July 2013.


COL Matsel’s military education includes the Field Artillery Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Field Artillery Survey and Target Acquisition Officers Course, the US Army Combined Arms Services and Staff School, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.


COL Matsel’s awards and decorations include: the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with Service Star, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Armed Forces Service Medal, the Kuwaiti Liberation Medal from both Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, the Army Service Badge, and Joint Service Badge.
