HEIDELBERG, Germany – U.S. Army Europe’s headquarters staff celebrated Flag Day and the Army’s birthday June 14 and paid honor to 236 years of Soldiers’ and Family members’ willingness to sacrifice to build a better future for others and to preserve the American way of life.

During the informal ceremony on Campbell Barracks, 1st and 2nd grade students from Heidelberg’s Mark Twain Elementary School performed patriotic songs and helped the audience sing Happy Birthday to the Army and to their teacher, Stacey Mease, who also celebrates her birthday on June 14.

Marissa Capel, spouse of Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas R. Capel, USAREUR’s command sergeant major, read with the children the book Happy Birthday U.S. Army.

No birthday celebration is complete without a birthday cake and this was no exception.
Maj. Gen. Terry A. Wolff, USAREUR’s deputy commander; Sue Hertling, spouse of USAREUR commanding general Lt. Gen. Mark P. Hertling; Marissa Capel; Mease; and Spc. Jeremie D. Hottel, in keeping with Army tradition, cut the cake with a ceremonial saber.
