Col. Van J. Voorhees Jr.

A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Col. Van J. Voorhees Jr. received his Army commission in May 1988 as a Distinguished Military Graduate of Elon College in North Carolina. He was assigned to the Aviation Branch and completed flight school in 1989.

Upon completion of flight school, Voorhees was assigned to 1st Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment at Fort Bragg, N.C., where he served as an executive officer and assault platoon leader, and participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In 1991 he was assigned to the Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C., where he served as brigade Headquarters and Headquarters Company executive officer and assault platoon leader. In 1993 he was assigned to the Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Calvary Division, Fort Hood, Texas, where he served as the deputy brigade operations officer and assault helicopter company commander. In 1996 he was assigned to the 17th Aviation Brigade in Yongsan, Korea, where he served as the deputy brigade operations officer. In 1997 Voorhees was assigned to Flight Concepts Division, Fort Eustis, Va., where he served as the current operations officer, troop commander, deputy director, and director of the Flight Concepts Division. Voorhees has also served as Joint Task Force operations officer (J-3), joint task force deputy commander, and director of the Baghdad Fusion Cell in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2008 Voorhees assumed command of the 1st Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) at Fort Campbell, Ky. Voorhees most recent assignment was as director of the Village Stability National Coordination Center, Combined Forces Special Operations Component Command, Kabul, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Voorhees’s military education includes the UH-60 Aviator Qualification Course, Ranger School, Air Assault Course, Airborne School, Jumpmaster Course, Aviation Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Combined Arms Service Staff School, Military Freefall Parachutist Course, Survival Evasion Resistance Escape Course, Command and General Staff College and the Joint Advanced Warfighter School. Voorhees holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from Elon College, a master’s degree in general administration from Central Michigan University and a master’s degree in Joint Campaign Planning and Strategy from the National Defense University.

Voorhees’s awards, decorations and badges include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with numeral 2, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Army Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, NATO Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with two bronze stars, the Afghanistan and Iraq Campaign Medals, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, the Armed Forces Service Medal, the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, the Ranger Tab, Combat Action Badge, Master Aviator Badge, Military Freefall Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge and Air Assault Badge.
