PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Pure Beta emitter

Beta Max = 0.067 MeV (100%)

Maximum Range in Air = 4 inches

Physical Half Life = 96 years

Biological Half Life = 3.3 years

Effective Half Life = 3.2 years

USES:

Found as sealed plated source in CAM Chemical Agent monitor NSN 6665-011-99-4153 10 mCi. N-63. Maximum Activity per unit: 12 mCi.

DETECTION:

Unshielded Ni-63 may be detected using thin window GM Radiac equipment. The sealed unit in the CAM provides sufficient shielding for the beta radiation from Ni-63, which may not be detectable without breaching the unit.

POSTINGS AND LABELING:

Instruments and article containing Nickel-63 have radiation symbol on the equipment.

Bulk storage areas will be posted “Caution Radioactive Material”, a copy of NRC Form-3, and Section 206 of the Energy Reorganization Act of 1974.

CONTAMINATION SURVEY SCHEDULE

A leak test will be performed every six months or whenever contamination is suspected. The action level is 1.35 nCi ( 3000 dpm). per smear.

Any area found to be contaminated will be decontaminated and resurveyed to below removable contamination levels. (3000 dpm/100 cm2.

PERSONNEL DOSIMETRY:

Millicurie quantities of Ni-63 do not present an external exposure hazard. TLDs or Film Badges are not required.

BIOASSAY REQUIREMENTS:

The ALI for Ni-63 is 30 MBq (800 µCi.)

Bioassay is only required in the event of a potential intake of 200 µCi. Such events are unforeseen in the present source configuration.

BIOLOGICAL FATE:

30% of intake is equally distributed throughout the body with a half life of 1200 days. 68% is excreted immediately. 2% is translocated to the kidneys with a half life of 0.2 days.
