WIESBADEN, Germany —
U.S. troops from units in Europe and based in the U.S. will participate in more than 50 ceremonial events June 1-9 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day in the Normandy region of France at the request of French civic and community leaders.
Nearly one-thousand U.S. service members will join contingents from more than five nations to recognize and honor the men and women of the Greatest Generation by performing music, marching in parades, and honoring the colors of allied nations in more than 30 French communities. A comprehensive list of U.S. military-supported events is available at the D-Day 75 website www.eur.army.mil/DDay75/
Several events will include D-Day and WWII veterans, side-by-side with currently-serving service members from lineage units such as the 82nd Airborne Division and 101st Airborne Division.
“The many ceremonies in which we will participate offer all the opportunity to reflect on the selfless service and sacrifice of the individuals who participated in the largest multi-national amphibious landing and operational military airdrop in history,” said U.S. Army Europe Commanding General Lt. Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli.
Seventy-five years later, the bravery and heroism demonstrated by Allies on D-Day continue to resonate with U.S. forces in Europe who remain steadfast in their commitment to European allies and partners.
“Our participation in these observances is just one way we honor our shared history together and demonstrate our commitment to the peace and security of Europe for the good of the next generation,” said Cavoli.
